It is that time again. Local gyms are seeing a spike in new memberships and social media is rife with fad diet plans making ridiculous promises. The 'Summer slim down' is upon us.
While achieving a healthy weight is a great goal, the urge to do it in as little time as possible is a recipe for disaster. A fad diet can lead to lean muscle loss and rapid weight regain, causing undesirable body composition changes, but they can also lead to disordered eating and an unhealthy relationship with food.
Make sure your weight loss goals are achievable by setting a weight loss goal no higher than 1kg per week. Celebrate small changes, such as increasing water intake, making physical activity a habit, meeting fruit and vegetable goals or limiting treats full of fat, sugar, salt and alcohol to one or two per week.
Keeping a food diary has been proven to assist with weight loss. A food diary does not need to be fancy. Whether using a pen and notebook or an app, find what works best for you.
